Our Story

The Acoustic Sound Hounds is a Kaufman County, Texas bluegrass band that plays traditional and contemporary bluegrass, country and old gospel while adding its own flavor to the music.  Their music has been described as “bluegrass with a twist” and “country grass.”  Always working on new material, the band specializes in writing and performing its own music compositions.

The Acoustic Sound Hounds completed its first album in early 2011.  The self-titled album contains eight original and two cover songs.  It was released at a landmark event in Crandall, Texas on July 22.  The band is currently assembling material for its second album.

The five person band consists of Combine residents Craig Dennie on banjo, Wallace Boyd on harmonica, and Phil Boyd on bass; and Cottonwood residents Jeff Gray on rhythm guitar and Pam Gray on mandolin.  Performances often include nine year old Jacie Gray as a guest vocalist.  The band was formed in mid-2008 when Pam began playing the mandolin.  Phil then put down his guitar and began playing bass, and brother Wallace joined in with harmonica and guitar.  Pam’s husband Jeff joined the group as rhythm guitar, and the band was complete by 2009 when Craig joined the group with his banjo.

The Acoustic Sound Hounds were soon overwhelmed with requests to perform.  Early performances included regular shows at the Servant's Book Store in Kaufman, and festivals in Kaufman, Crandall, Combine, and Ennis.  Soon the band was performing live music on the radio for KNON's Texas Renegade Radio Show in Dallas, and Mark Henderson's Country Jamboree on KRDH radio in Canton.  In addition to smaller venues, the band has performed at Rodeo City Music Hall (formerly the Mesquite Opry), the Poetry Music Festival, Bill's Records, Poor David's

Pub, the Five Alarm Country Music Festival, the Old Mill Inn at Fair Park, the Bristol Opry and the Ernest Tubb Record Shop at Fort Worth.  In 2011 the band performed two sets at the public opening of the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center.  When possible, the Band performs for the Kaufman Senior Center.  Other benefit performances include shows at the Race for the Cure, and the Veterans Traveling Tribute wall in Ennis.
